Welcome to the home of Don's Guide Service and fly fishing information.
I am always looking for new ideas and equipment to help out the fly fishing world. One of the big dissapointments in recent years is the unavailability of a lightweight and inexpensive fly fishing boat or pram. I have owned (still own 4) alumimun, fiberglass, and kevlar prams and liked them all. Most were very stable and did a good job. All of them have some minor problems that are easy to deal with. The aluminum ones are durable and lightweight needing little maintenance. The only problem is the noise level and the effect on spooky fish. This is not true in all situations, but when you are over fish that are easily spooked, the aluminum can be a problem. The fiberglass prams cure the noise problems, but seem to need more upkeep than many of us want to do. The kevlar ones are just like the fiberglass ones, but much lighter (and more expensive). THE BIGGEST PROBLEM is really the cost. There is only one major manufacturer of prams at this time and they are expensive but are high quality. That manufacturer is Jim Wheeler of Spring Creek Prams. He builds the prams personally to order and has many different configurations. Check out his prams on the internet and give him a call. Other than that you need to find a good used pram and get busy.
